What Is Gum Disease and What Are the Warning Signs?
Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is very common. According to the CDC, about 4 in 10 U.S. adults ages 30 and older have some level of periodontitis. Gum disease can become serious before you notice anything, so regular checkups matter. Watch for these warning signs:
- Red or Swollen Gums: Your gums may look puffy or feel tender to the touch.
- Bleeding Gums: You may notice bleeding when you brush, floss, or eat.
- Receding Gums: Your gums may pull down or away from your teeth.
- Loose or Sensitive Teeth: Your teeth may feel different from before.
- Painful Chewing: You may feel pain or notice changes in how your teeth fit together.
If you notice any of these, schedule an exam so we can check your gums.
Gingivitis or Periodontitis: What
Is the Difference?
Gingivitis is the mildest form of gum disease. Your gums become red, swollen, and may bleed easily, but it can be reversed with good home care and professional cleanings. If it goes untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which also involves bone loss around the teeth. The CDC notes that periodontitis cannot be reversed, but professional treatment can slow and manage it. That is why catching gum disease early gives you the most options.
What Is Laser Gum Treatment and How Does It Work?
If you are interested in using dental implants to replace one or more missing teeth, one of the first things our team will do during your consultation is assess your jawbone health. When a tooth or several teeth have been missing for many years, the jawbone tissue can deteriorate, and you may need a bone graft before implants can be placed. Patients should also be in generally good health.
Is Laser Gum Treatment Painful?
We numb your gums with a local anesthetic before treatment, so most patients feel little or no pain. If you feel anxious about dental visits, we also offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation dentistry. Tell us how you feel at any point, and we can adjust to keep you comfortable.
