What Is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by spanning the gap. An artificial tooth, called a pontic, sits in the empty space and is held in place by crowns on the healthy teeth on either side, called abutment teeth. You are far from alone if you are missing a tooth. The American Dental Association reports that about 120 million people in the United States are missing at least one.
What Are the Benefits of Dental Bridges?
Replacing a missing tooth with a bridge can change how you eat, speak, and feel about your smile. Many patients value the following benefits:
- Restored Appearance fills the gap with teeth matched to your smile
- Easier Chewing spreads the force of your bite more evenly
- Clearer Speech returns when missing teeth no longer affect your words
- Stable Neighbors stay in place instead of drifting into the gap
- Facial Support helps maintain the natural shape of your face
- Faster Timeline means a finished result without waiting for bone to heal
Together, these advantages explain why bridges remain a popular choice.
The Dental Bridge Process
A traditional bridge usually takes two visits. First, we prepare the supporting teeth by removing a small amount of enamel so the crowns can fit comfortably over them. Next, we take impressions for your custom bridge and place a temporary bridge to protect your teeth while we make the permanent one. At your follow-up visit, we remove the temporary, check the fit of your new bridge, cement it in place, and make any adjustments so it looks and feels natural.
An implant-supported bridge follows a different timeline because dental implants anchor it instead of natural teeth. We place the implants first, and they need several weeks to heal and bond with your jawbone before we attach the bridge. The benefit is that your natural teeth do not need to be reshaped, which is worth considering if you are missing several teeth in a row. At your consultation, we examine your teeth and bone and explain which type fits your needs and what the timeline would look like.
