What Does Professional Fluoride Do?

Your enamel constantly loses and regains minerals, and a fluoride treatment tips that balance in your favor. A concentrated fluoride application helps rebuild weakened enamel and makes it more resistant to the acids that cause cavities. It can also help reverse the earliest signs of decay before a cavity forms and may ease tooth sensitivity. The American Dental Association recognizes fluoride as safe and effective in preventing tooth decay for both children and adults.

Who Benefits Most From Fluoride Treatments?

Fluoride can help almost any patient, but some people gain more than others. We review your history and decay risk, then recommend what makes sense for you. You may be a good candidate if you have:

  • Frequent Cavities despite careful brushing and flossing at home
  • Dry Mouth from medications or conditions reducing your saliva
  • Weakened Enamel from wear, acid, or past decay
  • Exposed Roots from gum recession and softer tooth surfaces
  • Clear Aligners holding sugars and acids against your teeth

If any of these sound familiar, mention it at your next visit.

What Happens During a Fluoride Treatment?

A fluoride treatment is quick, painless, and usually part of a routine visit. After your cleaning, we paint a concentrated fluoride gel directly onto your teeth, which takes just a few minutes. We may ask you to avoid eating or drinking for a short time afterward so the fluoride can be absorbed and protect your enamel. Then you are free to go on with your day.

Many patients benefit from a fluoride treatment every six months, at their regular exams and cleanings. If you are at higher risk for decay, we may suggest treatments more often. Your needs can change over time, so we revisit the plan at each visit rather than treating it as one-size-fits-all.

Is Fluoride Safe?

Fluoride is a topic many patients have questions about, and we welcome them. Professional treatments use a small, controlled amount applied directly to your teeth, and the ADA considers fluoride safe and effective when used as directed. If you have concerns, a health condition, or questions about a child’s care, tell our team before your treatment. We can talk through your options, and the decision always stays with you.

Natural teeth are not the only ones at risk. Decay can form around the edges of existing fillings, dental crowns, and other restorations, where it is harder to spot and costly to repair. Fluoride adds a protective layer to the tooth structure around them. If you are straightening your teeth with clear aligner treatment, it is another smart way to protect your enamel during treatment.

Do You Accept Dental Insurance?

We are a fee-for-service practice, so we are not in-network with insurance plans. We file your paperwork as a courtesy and provide any documents your insurance company needs, so you can pursue the reimbursement your plan allows.

We accept cash, debit and credit cards, and CareCredit, and we offer in-house payment plans. Patients without insurance can also join our in-house membership plan. Our team is happy to review your options before treatment begins.

Your first visit is a one-on-one consultation where Dr. Rigby learns about your dental history and goals. Please bring any X-rays taken within the last year and your completed new patient forms, or arrive ten to fifteen minutes early to fill them out.
